Classic coats…my unhealthy obsession that I couldn’t be prouder of. When I lived on the east coast, I quickly learned coats are your “cute sweaters”. You’re constantly in there, so you have to love them and get excited to put them on because you n-e-v-e-r take them off. So over the last 6 years I have really taught myself what to look for in a “classic coat”. Below are my biggest tips and favorite coats I own/have tried.

TIPS TO FINDING THE PERFECT CLASSIC COATS

1. Go neutral. I know, it sounds a little less exciting, but more likely than not, it means you will keep it longer. At least for the highly priced coats you are buying, make sure they are a timeless color like tan, nude, black, grey, olive green, burgundy, etc. Stay away from the royal blues, bright pinks and mustard yellow options.

2. Don’t get too fancy with the structure. When picking the design, try and go for the more minimal option. The fancy belts, fur trimmed hoods, tweed pocket, bow details may be fun this year, but the likeliness you will enjoy them next year is slim. Plus you definitely will not a few years in the future.

3. Get something WARM. This sounds simple, but so often we gravitate towards coats that are cute and put the warmth factor on the back burner. It is crucial to find classic coats that are warm because you’ll end up coming back to them time and time again.

4. Lastly, make sure it has big, practical pockets. Silly, I know, but really true. A lot of trendy jackets have small pockets, silk lined, not warm pockets that make it hard to stay toasty. Plus, they are often at weird angles that make putting your hands in them difficult.

CLASSIC COATS I'VE TRIED

1. Daphne Top Coat

I added this coat to my collection this year and I couldn’t be more excited. The pockets are the perfect size. It pairs perfectly with all my neutrals. And, it’s heavy, but not the heaviest, so it’s perfect for fall.

2. Classic Quilted Jacket

I some how found this gem at T.J. Maxx over three years ago and it is still my most worn winter coat. The belt gives it a feminine twist and the leather lining brings it up one notch in sophistication. The black one is SO good too.

3. Cocoon Coat

You can’t beat the Italian wool in this coat and coat #6 and #7. The warm and quality of the coat is something that’s hard to find. I’ve had my Italian wool coat for almost 6 years now and it’s like brand new.

4. Hooded Coat

*Spoiler alert: I haven’t tried this exact one*. Cole Haan has become a brand I trust with coats and this one (although I haven’t bought it yet), is beautiful. I love my other ones by Cole Haan and want to add this to my collection so badly. Winters are ROUGH. Living in Ohio and NYC taught me very quickly the importance of a warm classic coat. We go snowboarding a lot in the winter and you can expect to see me in this during the in between.

5. Puffer Jacket

I have this coat, this coat and about 4 others from this brand (including the one pictured above) and I love each of them so much. Whenever I am running errands in leggings and sneakers, these are my go-to options.

6. Double-Breasted Coat

This jacket is the most professional option and one of my favorites. My mom got it for me in a light blush years ago and I always feel ready to take on the world when I wear it.

7. Lodge Coat

Ahh the lodge coat. We got it for my sister a few Christmases ago and it is so city-chic. The rib cuff on the sleeves is everything in cold weather.

8. Nano Puff Jacket

This jacket is the one I wear under E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. I also can stick layers under it, but I love to wear it under my ski jacket on freezing days. But it is also the perfect option for fall days where you just need a decent layer.
